James Jirat Patradoon is a young Sydney-based illustrator that has been steadily unleashing bold, manic, character-driven works over the last few years. Citing Katsuhiro Otomo and Raymond Pettibon as influences, Patradoon’s work- in his own words- is, “An irreverent take on the stoic nature of macho pop-culutre.” His highly stylized illustrations radiate with energy; achieved not just by his preferred iconography but by his palette of explosive, neon colours and the rough, Pettibon-esque way in which he scratchily ‘fills’ his work via shading. Overall, his works are very much alive as though he has illustratively photographed his characters in motion: like a snapshot of them hurling through space and time (which speaks to the way Otomo has influenced Patradoon). While you’d presume Patradoon’s work would exist within the punk realm, he has actually been commissioned by a ton of electro acts and major bands. Keep an eye on this kid.
