I did Award school to get out of a rut, it kind of helped me in the sense that the creative ideals you see on documentaries like Art & Copy are very much alive in Award school and it got me energised about ideas and being able to figure out a good idea from a bad idea.
There are two classes a week, one lecture and one tutorial. After the lecture everyone goes to the pub and you are encouraged to network with the industry lecturer of that week(which hardly anyone does).
Award school makes every attempt to make the advertising industry as accessible as possible to students, despite what it can seem like, people in the advertising industry are really eager to help you.
Ultimately I got over the reality of what it meant to work in advertising, it wasn’t that I didn’t like the idea of late nights and busting my ass, it was just that it was for brands, and I kind of didn’t give a crap. Also I fell behind in the workload and didn’t do as well as I should have, but if I wanted to be good at it I would have been good at it.
It encourages ‘thinking’ over ability, because abilities can get outsourced and just become technical, whereas good ideas are a lot harder to come by and you can’t quantify ideas by hours or anything like that.
